OK, We Tried. The Iranians Aren't Interested In Negotiations.
A U.S. decision to bend policy and sit down with Iran at nuclear talks fizzled Saturday, with Iran stonewalling Washington and five other world powers on their call to freeze uranium enrichment.
In response, the six gave Iran two weeks to respond to their demand, setting the stage for a new round of U.N. sanctions.
Iran's refusal to consider suspending enrichment was an indirect slap at the United States, which had sent Undersecretary of State William Burns to the talks in hopes the first-time American presence would encourage Tehran into making concessions.
Officials and diplomats refused to characterize the timeframe as an ultimatum, but it appeared clear that Iran now has a de-facto deadline to show flexibility.

What a bunch of crap our so called leaders are spewing. Iran is a long, long way from developing a nuke. They have to develop and test a nuclear device and a delivery system. It takes a lot of testing to be successful. We will know in plenty of time. Besides, if they use a nuke on Israel, they're going to get it in the face. Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Iraq and probably a lot of Iran itself would be poisoned with the fall-out. Sure, that will help Iran a lot. The ME is too close quarters for any of those countries to use a nuke on each other. It is suicide for all. Iran is not a threat. It's all fear and war mongering for power and profit. There's a lot of influence and support for the West in Iran, and if we bomb them, we loose that support and help keep Ahmadinejad elected, giving him more power. This one man is the only threat, not the whole country of Iran, and the best thing is to ignore him till he goes away.

Iran is determined to have a nuke no matter what anyone says.

They know that to stop them would risk widening the war in the Middle East which is something America would be hard pressed to do because of low troop levels and growing anti-war sentiment within its own body politic and citizenry. To my knowledge, most of the EU is also against such a situation occurring.
I believe what Iran needs to do is play nice until they see who is going to be president then act accordingly. -

Why not Israel give up its nukes as a first step for a nuclear free middle east?

dcfixer's comments on the fall out factor are well taken. I hope your're right. Every scenario that can be imagined or simulated that involves nuclear weapons is disastrous.
Perhaps this is why the U.S. and the former U.S.S.R. never had that dreaded nuclear exchange. Both sides realized that the spoils to the victor would be.......nothing but a nuclear ash heap!
Comforting to know that for years now, mankind has had the ability to eliminate its own species from the planet.

I find it strange that despite that some countries conduct enrichment activities, have nuclear weapons, and even engaged in nuclear proliferation, not to mention harbor terrorists such as Bin Laden they aren't part of "axis of evil".
On the other hand, Iran is part of the "axis of evil" even though there are a number of countries that have enrichment programs, seems like an awful double standard to have and I think one standard will do just fine here.
Not to mention that Article IV of NPT allows for a civilian enrichment program.
If this was about the fact that Iran had violated the safeguards portion of NPT by having a secret enrichment program, thanks to our friends in Pakistan, then it seems to me that US, UK and EU would be stressing compliance with safeguards article of NPT, not suspension of nuclear program in its negotiations with Iran.
It seems hardly surprising that a country in the Middle East interested in a civilian enrichment program would keep the program secret seeing how they live in the same region as the trigger-happy Israel, which isn't bound by NPT or any of its safeguards, and whose belligerent foreign policy of aggression, invasion and colonization is aimed at preserving its position as the regional superpower.
Then again, all this belligerent posturing by Israel, US, and UK is just that. US won't be able to deal with economic consequences of Israeli or American aggression toward Iran not to mention the military repercussions. Of course that doesn't mean there isn't a reason to worry, since we know the current administration's record of thinking ahead all too well. And potentially next administration's won't be any more levelheaded.
