Idiots! they are already in financial trouble, so what do they do? Ignore safety regulations and risk: A) fines from the FAA B) loss of passenger revenue from P.O.ed passengers C) HUGE lawsuits if one of those poorly maintained planes crashes D) All of the above.

Correct answer: D) all of the above.

I've got an American flight coming up pretty soon - luckily it's on Boeing aircraft. (They'll probably find something to inspect on THOSE about 2 hours before my flight...)

The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and MD-90 are twin-engine, medium-range, single-aisle commercial jet airplanes. The MD-80 aircraft was originally part of the DC-9 line when first delivered before being later renamed. The MD-80 series and MD-90 have seating capacity up to 172 passengers. They have a common cabin layout that seats 140 passengers on scheduled flights and 161 or 165 on low-cost or charter flights.

The MD-80's production ended in 1999. No MD-90 orders were taken after Boeing and McDonnell Douglas merged in 1997 due to internal competition with Boeing's 737.The last variant of the family was the MD-95, which was renamed the Boeing 717-200 after McDonnell Douglas's merger with Boeing in 1997.

The incredible disregard for established procedures, laws, morals and common sense demonstraded by many in the senior levels of bussiness and politics is the reason the country is facing current hard times.

The unilateral desmantling of economic principles, the removal of logical cheks and balances in favor of imediate satisfaction of short term profit is killing the very base that made this country great. Sooner than expected we will become a nation owned by foreiners, shipping out larger and larger portions of our increasingly meager earnings to masters on other continents. Talk about reversal!

Its time we, the people, start demanding accountability from our leaders, financial and political, rather than just blindly accept at face value all the thinly veiled b.s. coming out of their paid p.r. reps mouth.

If we can unify behind moral ideas and ideals, we will once again rule the world without having to use our military might as the one and only option.

As a former quality control inspector this is totally irritating and is the fault of the company! There are procedures that states how wiring bundles are to be handled!

American Airlines doesn't outsource most maintenance. The company repairs 90 percent of its fleet and performs work for other airlines at stations in Fort Worth; Tulsa, Okla.; and Kansas City, Mo.

Can you imagine what is going on with the airlines that do outsource maintenance?

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's inspector general - Among carriers that farm out heavy maintenance, about 35 percent is done abroad.

A 2005 inspector general's report found that airlines used foreign stations that weren't FAA-certified. It said that neither the FAA nor air carriers provided oversight of the maintenance work at those facilities.

American Airlines is one of the worst airlines I have flown. I avoid flying them whenever possible. I'm not surprised that they could get themselves into a mess like this. In fact I have been surprised that they have stayed in business for so long.

This looks a lot like a power play. The FAA, under pressure from Congress, is looking more closely at aircraft maintenance. In response, American Airlines is demonstrating that the former relationship, in which FAA inspectors were more permissive, is the best way to go. Or else....
