Raul Castro's government opened luxury hotels and resorts to all Cubans Monday, ending a ban despised across the island as "tourist apartheid" and taking another step toward the creation of a consumer economy in the socialist state.

    FTA:

Cuba has made a series of crowd-pleasing announcements in the past few days. Cubans with enough cash will be able to buy computers, DVD players and plasma televisions starting Tuesday, and soon they'll even be able to have their own cell phones â;; consumer goods only companies and foreigners were previously permitted to buy.

Maybe now Cubans will want to stay home!

Could be some business opportunities over there! Cheap labor only 90 miles away. If Raul loosens up a bit and allows some cash to be placed in the right hands, some real profits could be generated. No need to pay medical benefits since they already have socialized medicine with a lower infant mortality rate than the United States. Sugar cane is also a cheap source of ethanol.

Things could be looking up for Cuba.

It's really amazing that the Cuban people have been denied things like DVD players, plasma tv's and computers. Fidel was something else/

I don't actually know what a plasma tv is n2n, as far as I know I've never seen one in my life - and have never owned a TV anyway. No great deprivation!

HOWEVER if I had to forgo my occasional Cuban cigar THAT would hurt - something that US citizens have been forbidden for decades!

I have traveled to Cuba 3 times and have always left knowing I will return, the people are warm and friendly, the country is beautiful, and the weather is a great getaway for Canadians.

As a Canadian I have never understood what USA has had against Cuba, but then again until 1971 USA was able to ignore 25% if the worlds population, China.

All this is, is politics, it is not what makes the people what they are, I mean are all Americans war mongers just because shrub is? This may be a bit ambiguous in comparison but it has some merit when judging another country.

I don't have anything against Cubans! I have something against illegal immigration, and Fla is full of Cubans who have come here illegaly. If they want to become citizens that would be fine with me, have them work and pay taxes and into Social Security along with everyone else, not work under the table, pay no taxes and then have children that qualify for welfare and food stamps.

I think the reason Americans had a problem with Cuba was back in the 60's, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, then Fidel hated us with a passion. You're right though, it is politics, put simply.

Of course you were one of the tourists staying in the luxury hotels and enjoying a lifestyle unavailable to the Cuban people. Do all Canadians suffer from the "Michael Moore Syndrome" and view Cuba as this workers' paradise instead of the oppressive dictatorship it is?

Maybe he could start by having an actual free election with opposing candidates and everything.

Oh Wow! How lucky! If Cubans can save their entire salary for three months they can enjoy a night's stay at a beautiful hotel.

Wake up people - you don't know what life in Cuba is like. And . . . Raul is no better than Fidel.

          HannibalBarca,

I take it you're a young person. The problem was not what the USA had against Cuba it was what Fidel Castro had against the USA way before the Bay of Pigs -- a hatred so profound that during the missile crisis he insisted the Soviet Union launch the Cuba missiles into the United States even though he knew that would provoke Cuba's disappearance from the face of the earth. Go figure...

If your going to tell history why not tell the entire story with no spin, Castro kicked corrupt Americans out of Cuba along with the mob, when his attempts to normalize relations with the US were ignored and the US became aggressive he reached out to the Russians like anyone in his position would. Of course you have proof for your accusation of Castro insisting on a missile strike?

Yeah, Cuba is a workers paradise and now they are going to be able to stay in luxury hotels. Wow, they are just too good to those folks down there next week maybe they'll have enough food to keep them form starving to death.

Typical American response, ban exports to Cuba then belittle them for not having the goods to sell.

Jaydee40, I put no spins on my statements. The proof comes straight from the Russian horse's mouth -- read Nikita Khrushchev's autobiography "Khrushchev Remembers" written by Nikita in 1971. How come it's so hard for some people to disbelieve facts but yet eat up false propaganda like "free medical care for all its citizens" and "lower infant mortality rate" and "free education", etc., etc. etc.

By the way, the money made from people visiting the government;s resorts are not making many changes possible at all. Do you know that the foreign "partners" of Castros' government pay the government in dollars and the employees at these resorts then get a fraction of that paid to them by the government in pesos?!
