Ok, so then if there WASN'T any airport security... I'd imagine all those hijackers and shoe bombers would just stay at home because it's the right thing to do?

I don't see this as an all-or-nothing choice. Where does the line get drawn, is it too much or too little security vs. the risk, and how do we measure the effectiveness of our security policies?
If the airport security programs are working then the extra wait time is an easy trade to make. But are they working or do these security programs only give us the outward appearance of working? Inquiring minds want to know.
